Blogging gets a lot of hype as a cool way to make money online.
It’s the truth, most of the time.

Blogging can be super lucrative if you invest in it. But it can also take a while before you start to see any returns.
Most people don’t know this so they quit right before their blog has a chance to take off.
Knowing what to expect on the other hand will help you stay focused and build a successful blog that makes you money!
That’s what I’ll be showing you in this visual post.
Let’s start by looking at the different blogging models because how fast you start making sustainable blogging income really depends mostly on the blogging model you decide to adopt.
1. Ad Based Blog
An ad based blog makes the bulk of its money from display advertisements.
Payout ranges from $1.5 – $21 per 1000 pageviews and most ad agencies will have a minimum threshold for withdrawal.
Some ad networks used in this model include Adsense, Mediavine, Adthrive, Monumetric …
You could also decide to sell your own adspace yourself like my friend Enstine does on his blog.
It typically takes at least 1 year to get to a steady $1000 per month from ads.
2. Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing is yet another way to monetize your blog and this works very well with big and small blogs too.
You can typically make up to $1000/month in 6 months with this model!
The bloggers who make the most with affiliate marketing typically have their email marketing game down to a ‘T’.

3. Products
This is one of the very best ways to make money with your blog!
With a lot of planning you can make $1000 in your 2nd month.
You could create courses, ebooks, anything at all.
Like I created pin templates and those started making me money from my very first month.
My friend Kara also created a full shop of graphic design resources for bloggers and made $11,000 with her product launch at 7 months!
If you want to create products too I recommend you check out her shop.
4. Services
This is the surest way to quickly make money from your blog.
I recently interviewed a busy mom who’s also an RN who made $1200 from few hours of services before 6 months.
Some services to offer include:
- Freelance Writing.
- Website Design.
- Coaching. (This can be in your expertise and help your blog grow!)
- Photography.
- Social Media Management. …
- Lots more!
Which will you be using?
5. Sponsored Posts
You could combine Instagram and blogging to become a sponsored influencing ninja or you could use your blog alone, it’s up to you.
But one thing is sure, many mom bloggers are killing it with sponsored posts even with little following.
With sponsored posts, you get freebies and cash!
Check out this post for ideas on getting sponsored posts as a new blogger.
See? You really can make money blogging you just have to set your expectations right.

What a great post Lily, and infographic too.
Puts thing into perspective for newbies, so they don’t get disappointed and quit too early.
As for me, I like affiliate marketing the best as it feels almost like passive income, though we, bloggers who’re in the trenches, know that there’s no such thing.
Cheers!
Haha!
I love the way you say there’s no such thing.
Will you make money in your sleep? Yes of course.
Will that money be as a product of your hard work when you were awake? You bet.
I think we should really just rename “Passive income” as far as blogging is concerned. Maybe “Indirect income?” Haha
Thanks for stopping by Nikola
Years as the IGs note Lily BUT….really key here…it is years of doing smart, generous, creating and connecting. Some bloggers complain how it has been 4 years and no cents flowed in. But they did not create and connecting generously….so it’ll be 400 years without a cent for them LOL.
Thanks Ryan, you are so right about it being years of smart work!
Most bloggers postpone their success by working so hard without a plan and they burnout just as hard.
