Affiliate Marketing on Amazon: How to Make Real Money (with Laura Iancu)

Affiliate marketing on Amazon is one of the best ways for bloggers to make passive income no matter your niche.

This is because when you have a great amazon affiliate marketing strategy in place, all you need to do is write a post once and potentially reap passive income from it for years.

The perk with using Amazon for affiliate marketing is that when someone clicks through your link and buys anything at all within 24hrs, you get commission on the sale!

*As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. This post may contain affiliate links from Amazon or other publishers I trust (at no extra cost to you). See disclosure for details.

So if someone clicks on your affiliate link for a $20 ebook for example and ends up buying the $1,000 laptop she’d been wanting to buy for weeks, you get commission of up to 10% on the sale!

I’ll wait for you to do the maths and start your own blog if you haven’t already (it’s a requirement to apply).

Now imagine when you have several of those money making posts spread all over your blog!

That’s exactly what my friend Laura from By Laura Iancu will be teaching us today, how to make sustainable passive income from amazon affiliate marketing.

Hey Laura! Thank you so much for agreeing to chat. You are big on affiliate marketing with Amazon and I would very much like to introduce that (and the way to do it right) to my mom friends. First tell us please, what’s your experience with Amazon affiliate marketing, is Amazon affiliate marketing profitable, would you say it was a sustainable way to make money blogging?

Thank you for having me, Lily!

I’ve been an Amazon affiliate (or associate) for years and always loved how easy it was to make money this way.

Between Amazon’s kick-ass conversion skills, the super optimized customer experience, and the previous customer reviews, most of the work is already done for you.

At first, I was surprised to see a sale here and there because I wasn’t putting much effort into it at all. This intrigued me, so I started to dig deeper and better to understand all that I could do with the tools Amazon provides you as an affiliate, as well as what makes someone click through and buy.

That’s when things got interesting, and my earnings really took off.

Amazon’s affiliate program can be very lucrative. Amazon has tons of products that practically sell themselves. If a reader likes that turtleneck sweater you’ve been linking to, they can add it to their cart right away (Prime users can purchase it in 1 click, which is insane!). On top of that, if they have questions about the warmth, quality or even the correct washer cycle, they can find pretty much all the answers right under the product description.

Between Amazon’s kick-ass conversion skills, the super optimized customer experience, and the previous customer reviews, most of the work is already done for you. So, yes, being an Amazon affiliate can definitely be a sustainable way to make money with your blog.

That’s interesting, so how does amazon affiliate marketing work exactly? Can you please explain the process to us.

Of course! It’s quite clever, actually.

We are all brand ambassadors in our daily lives.

I mean, who doesn’t like to tell their friends about their new phone or standing desk, right? Sharing makes us feel good about our choices. The only difference is that when you are part of Amazon’s affiliate program, you could earn extra cash at the same time.

Being an Amazon affiliate is risk-free. Plus all the hard work is handled behind the scenes by Amazon, which is awesome!

Once you become an Associate, you can start linking to any products on Amazon using your own unique special link.

If someone visits your blog and your product recommendation piques their interest, they can easily click on your affiliate link and purchase that product. Amazon records the purchase, credits it to you and you earn a commission. At the same time, your blog reader has a new product she loves. So it’s a win-win!

What blogging niches would you say are best suited for Amazon affiliate marketing in your experience? I know there isn’t really a “best niche” for Amazon affiliate marketing but which ones would you say have the biggest money-making potential?

You are right. I don’t think there is a “best niche” either. Amazon sells hundreds of millions of products, so no matter what niche you’re in, it’s pretty much impossible NOT to find something to promote. And as long as you do it right, there’s always a huge earning potential.

It all comes down to several things – like choosing the right products and the way you market them. I talk a lot about this in my ebook, How To Make Money As An Amazon Affiliate

I’ve seen people doing great in weird niches most people would have a hard time monetizing, and it was all because they were passionate about the subject and willing to learn and explore new possibilities.

I would never recommend anyone to start a blog in a niche they don’t know anything about or have no interest in just because they’ve read it was profitable.

There are other factors WAY more important that your niche.

What about social networks? Can you do Amazon affiliate marketing on Instagram directly? On Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube, Twitter, which one is best and what are the rules?

Yes, you can. There are certain limitations, and you have to be aware of the rules to avoid being kicked out of the program.

I actually wrote a whole post on common Amazon affiliate mistakes you don’t want to make.

For example, you should always disclose that you are using affiliate links – both on your blog and on social media.

Amazon is very peculiar when it comes to the product information you can and cannot share and the places where you can use your affiliate links. At the same time, social media has its own challenges when it comes to sharing affiliate links.

Take Instagram – you cannot post active links in post captions. But if you have over 10k followers, you can add links in stories.

As for the best social network, it all depends on the levels and engagement and trust you’ve built with your followers. Some statistics point out that Pinterest users are 85% more inclined to buy from a pin than any other social media platform. But that doesn’t mean a thing if your pinning strategy is lacking.

In your Amazon affiliate marketing ebook which I recommend all the time, you share some insane strategies for beginners. But for someone who couldn’t afford to buy your $25 ebook even though they really wanted to make it work, what would you advise as a basic Amazon affiliate marketing strategy for beginners?

You have to make a point of including affiliate links in your content.

Writing a blog post, and linking to an affiliate product will not take you far, but doing it over and over again can take you a long way.

Like any business, affiliate marketing requires consistency.

You cannot link to one product or post one social media update and pretend like you’ve given it your best shot.

Lots of people show up once. But that’s just the beginning. Like any business, affiliate marketing requires consistency. Nelson Mandela said it best: “I never lose. I either win, or I learn.”

Focus on learning. The winning will shortly follow.

Any extra Amazon affiliate marketing tips you would like to share?

Yes! The internet is a global thing, and regardless of your intended target audience, you’ll always have blog visitors and followers from all over the world.

The good news is that you can monetize your international traffic and earn commissions from sales made on different local Amazon websites. But many people are not aware of the fact that there are certain differences between Amazon Associates USA and its European versions.

you can monetize your international traffic and earn commissions from sales made on different local Amazon websites.

It’s best to read the Amazon Associates rules for each program you are a part of to stay out of trouble.

I know all this can feel a bit overwhelming, but you can do this! Remember that no one became “Oprah in a day” – not even Oprah. You got this!

Wow, wow right? I’m sure you’ll agree that this is one of the best expert interviews we’ve had on the blog.

Thanks so much Laura.

Now all that’s left is for you to take action. Start with the tips Laura has shared here freely, ask questions. I’m sure you’ll get it right after a few months of testing.

If you can’t wait a few months however, you should definitely get Laura’s underpriced Ebook. It’s the best there is out there and her strategies work.
